1999 Chi-Chi Earthquake

The Mw 7.6 Chi-Chi earthquake was the largest earthquake to occur within the Taiwan island during the last 100 years. The Chi-Chi earthquake resulted from rupturing and reactivation of the Chelungpu fault, which is situated at the range front of the fold-thrust belt of the Taiwan mountain belt. Immediately following the earthquake, geologists of Taiwan as well as those from the foreign countries mapped the near 100-km long surface ruptures.
